Printed by Keatinge & Ball in Columbia, SC. Dated February 17th 1864. Series 7; serial #58514, VERY GOOD+ condition.
Dark printing. Nice signatures and numbering. Fully framed, with a full borderline visible. Numerous folds and creases. Ink erosion in the endorsement. There is a 3/4 inch tear at the bottom right signature, and another 1/4 tear above the left medallion. Also, the bottom right corner tip is nearly torn off. Despite being circulated, and having the flaws, all the details are well intact. Featured near the top, is a one of a kind, hand written Union military endorsement by (what appears to be) W R Wiley, in the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry. This issue endorsement reads: Captured The 2nd Regiment of Cavalry, Massachusetts Volunteers was a regiment of cavalry troops made up mostly of men from the states of California and Massachusetts. The regiment became a part of King's Division in the XXII Corps in 1863, and later served in the Army of the Shenandoah under Philip H. Sheridan during the Valley Campaigns of 1864. The group was involved in many actions, including the battles of Fort Stevens, Opequon, Tom's Brook, and Cedar Creek. It also participated in the Siege of Petersburg in 1865, along with the Appomattox Campaign. A Confederate note, with a "CAPTURED" endorsement from a Union Cavalry soldier, does not appear on the market everyday. When you are holding notes that have been endorsed by Military personnel in the Civil War, you are holding extra history in your hands. Your satisfaction is always GUARANTEED. Price: SOLD |
