A nice example of this famous 1864 $50 “Havana Counterfeit”. Counterfeited heavily in Havana, Cuba. Dated February 17th 1864. Plate letters XA, 1st series. Hand written forged signatures. Machine printed serial number of 44788. Encapsulated, certified to be a Counterfeit, and graded by PMG "VERY FINE 25".
Crisp paper. Dark details. Fully framed. One vertical fold in the center, and then several light handling creases. A few small edge tears at the bottom margin, and then another small edge tear at the top margin; mostly in the extra margins. No pinholes. Grover Criswell writes that these notes were produced in Havana and smuggled into Mobile. These counterfeits circulated heavily during the War, by unsuspecting citizens and soldiers. They are not to be confused with all the copies and reproductions on the market that have no value. A very popular contemporary counterfeit from the Civil War era. Plus, it is already certified by one of the best independent grading companies in the business. Price: RESERVED |
