Fully framed. Worn paper with numerous margin slits, but still intact. The details are still visible. Two interest paid stamps on the back side from Richmond, VA.

Writing on the backside shows this note was issued by Confederate Captain William F. Moore, who was Quartermaster in the 51st Regiment Virginia Infantry in 1861 to 1863.

The endorsement reads as follows:

Issued April 1 1863
W. F. Moore Capt
&AQM CSA

A very interesting discussion on this endorsement is found in Mike McNeil's 2016 book "Confederate Quartermasters, Commissaries, and Agents" on pages 510-511. His book is an excellent resource if you are looking to learn more about notes that have endorsements.

Determining the engagements and path of Captain Moore during the Civil War has been a challenge. Some reports state that he was captured in Tennessee in 1863 and charged with being a spy. There aren't many documents found with his name after 1863, and more research is needed.

This note may be worn, but it carries a very clean endorsement by an interesting Confederate officer.

Price: $750.00
