Printed by B. Duncan, Richmond, VA...CHOICE FINE condition. Dated September 2nd, 1861. Second Series. Plate number 3.
Dark printing. Sharp details. Nicely cut, with a full borderline visible, which is fairly scarce for this issue. Extra margin on three sides!
Evenly worn paper, with numerous folds, creases and pinholes. However, the paper still retains some crispness, and holds up well. The overall detail and design are still very clear and intact.
Nice signatures, with hand written serial numbers in two places...13503. A couple slight edge tears, outside of the frame line in the extra margin.
This issue is most often found in worn condition, and many are tempted to inflate the grade due to the price leap for high grade examples.
While average circulated examples can be found for under $200, the price quickly leaps to over $1K for Choice XF and above, when they can be found.
If you still need to add or upgrade this issue in your collection, you can't go wrong with this example. Overall, this is a nice looking example of this early 1861 issue, that is graded conservatively, and should well meet your expectations. |
