1861 $5 T-36 UNCUT CONFEDERATE SHEET,fully signed; An extraordinary example of Confederate history that is seldom seen, much less offered. A GENUINE, AUTHENTIC, UNCUT CONFEDERATE SHEET that has been kept intact since 1861, the beginning of the Civil War. This sheet was complete, and ready to be cut apart, but was intercepted just prior to it being dispersed into circulation.
This sheet features (8) UNCUT $5 T-36 (Cr278) notes from 1861, in XF++ condition. Most would grade AU.
Listed as being "SCARCE", with a rarity of 8, with only an estimated 101-200 known to exist. Tightly held by collectors. All (8) notes are hand signed in two places, and each one carries a handwritten serial number of 13041 written in red ink. The serial numbers are all the same, however the plate letters are different, starting with 9A, and ending with 16A. The backside is plain with no printing. It is from the SECOND SERIES, and was printed by J. T. PATTERSON & Company in Columbia,
South Carolina.
The sheet possesses outstanding eye appeal, and has excellent contrast and clarity with dark printing. The cut is nice, and the paper is very crisp and clean. The front looks UNC. There are no hard folds. On the reverse, there can be seen four light vertical wavy areas, not hard fold lines. The top two corners are sharp and unbent. The top 6 notes on the sheet are in great condition. The bottom two notes have a rough bottom edge, with some paper curling and a few small tears, but the paper is mostly there.
The design of each note is an old design. In the center is "Commerce seated on a bale of cotton"; with a ship over her right shoulder, and a railroad over her left. Flanked underneath are the words "CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA" in wavy format. At the extreme left is a sailor relaxing gingerly.
If you have desired to own a rarer piece of Confederate currency history, here is one item that should prove to be a nice investment. This would also make a great gift for any Civil War collector who most likely would not have seen just such an item before. It measures just over 14 inches in width, by 12 inches in length, so it will fit nicely into a frame. It will be shipped in a nice 14x17 artguard protective holder. Some of the top Confederate collections do not have THIS sheet to showcase. Rest assured, it looks much nicer in hand than what the pictures show. Additional pictures available upon request.
Guaranteed for life to be GENUINE and ORIGINAL. |
